Do you remember your first “crush”? How you thought you’d go crazy if you couldn’t see him or her? All you could think about was being with them? Just one look at them and you’d feel a rush of emotion. However, we’ve also probably all felt the sting of region from a first love.
When we get wounded in our “first love” experiences in the natural (teased or embarrassed or rejected), we begin to build walls of self-protection so we won’t get hurt again. However, those very walls keep out the powerful emotions of first love that Jesus wants us to have with Him!
Doing the Right Things, but Missing the Point
Jesus loved the church at Ephesus. They were hard workers, doing great things. But one thing was missing – first love (Revelation 2:4). They’d lost their passion for Jesus.
It can be easy to lose our “first love” with Jesus, just like the Ephesian church! This was the church that Paul prayed would “…be empowered to discover…the great magnitude of the astonishing love of Christ in all its dimensions. How deeply intimate and far-reaching is His love! How enduring and inclusive it is. Endless love beyond measurement that transcends our understanding—this extravagant love pours into you until you are filled to overflowing with the fullness of God!” (Ephesians 3:17-19, Passion Translation).
Changing the Heart
It is easy to know this in our head, but another matter for it to touch the depths of our heart. God wants us to experience His extravagant, intimate love, not as a mental concept, but as a heart-felt, head-over-heels love encounter that changes us!
In the midst of our busy lives, it can be easy to forget our first love. We might rush through our devotional time, saying a quick prayer and reading a Scripture. However, God wants so much more. Not because He wants to add pressure to our schedule, but because He so longs for intimate time with you. Meditate on Me is God’s invitation to you to come aside and have some face to face time with Him.

Did you see the movie “Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation?” In it, Ethan must dive deep underwater and hold his breath for an extended amount of time in order to save hundreds of lives. They carefully calculate how much time he has to accomplish his mission, but then something goes wrong!
I watched as he slowly began to run out of breath. Oh, how I wanted him to get some air as I saw him struggle. I squirmed in my seat, fighting to help him get some oxygen. As human beings, we instinctively know we have to have air to live. It’s difficult to watch someone not able to breathe.
No one has to tell you to take your next breath. It’s so automatic you rarely think about it unless something prevents you from getting it. Yet it is one of the most vital functions of your body. You can’t last very long without oxygen. Every organ of your body is hungry for it.
We’ve gotten to where we breathe very shallowly, therefore depriving our bodies of much needed oxygen. But we are used to it, and hardly notice.
There are many benefits to deep breathing, including losing weight! That’s good news!
- Releases stress and tension in the body by relaxing constricted muscles.
- Brings mental clarity by relaxing the mind and body by reducing anxiety levels
- Reduces or relieves pain – that’s why it’s a big component of Lamaze!
- Detoxifies and releases toxins – 70% of toxins are removed by breathing! If you aren’t breathing deeply, toxins aren’t eliminated effectively.
- Strengthens your immune system, heart and lungs
- Increases energy levels and stamina as it distributes oxygen rich blood throughout your body.
- Helps in weight loss – extra oxygen burns up excess fat faster!
- Elevates mood – increases “feel good” hormones
- Aids in cell regeneration
So, take a deep breath!
Spending 8-10 minutes each day, breathing deeply, while you meditate, will begin to improve oxygen levels and build better breathing habits. I know that when I am regularly meditating I feel better, inside and out!

I’ve battled with sleep for many years. You might be able to relate — the difficulty to fall asleep and/or frequent waking in the night. In the process, I’ve tried many things. Some worked, others didn’t. One of the keys that I’ve found to help me sleep better is daily meditation.
It seems strange that meditation during the day would help you rest at night, but it’s true! I’ve found that when I consistently meditate, I fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer! When I get “too busy” and neglect to meditate, I soon find myself battling insomnia.
It is easy to believe that meditation is something for when we “have enough time.” However, God’s Word is clear that we will prosper in all we do when we meditate regularly on His Word (Psalm 1). Making this a priority will change your life – not just spiritually, but physically as well!
